Love not Lust

  Romeo and Juliet is considered the greatest love story of all time, but is it really great or is it just great because it's a couple of hundred years old and was written by a poet and a play writer who may or may not be real? Romeo and Juliet is similar to a lot of other famous stories too, like Helen and Paris, but Helen didn't really like Paris. For Romeo and  Juliet's story, they really did love one another, they even died for one another. This isn't lust. This is really love. These are the reasons why. 

  Most people's thoughts on Romeo and Juliet is that they think its romantic to die for one another. But is it really worth dying for someone who you just met? Or you love that someone so much you give up on life when you lose them? One doesn't know until they find out for sure. One story that is similar to Romeo and Juliet is about Paris and Helena. The site that held this information says it might be a fact or fiction. Helen of Troy was considered the most beautiful woman in all literature. She was married to Menelaus, the king of Sparta. Paris, the prince of Troy, fell in love with Helena and abducted her, taking her back to Troy. That led to a war, destroying Troy and Helen was back with Menelaus. 

Was Helena really worth the destruction of Troy based on what Paris heard about Helena's beauty? Because of him Troy was destroyed. Is love really that important? In Act 5 Scene 3 "Thus with a kiss I die". In this line Romeo drinks poison because he thought Juliet had died and he couldn't bare that so he killed himself because he couldn't be with her. Then later on Juliet kills herself because she can't live without Romeo. Act 5 scene 3 " There rust, and let me die". They died for someone that they met couple of days ago.

 The again love is everywhere. In the hallways of schools, songs, movies, at home and etc. You wonder if one is better than the other. When you're in love and it lasts the most likely thing would be to get married. But there are people in the world who are in love with other people for a week or a month exactly like Romeo and Juliet. But they weren't allowed to because of their families. Act 2 Scene 2 "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet". Here Juliet is saying if the flower, Rose would smell sweet even if it wasn't called a Rose. Meaning if Romeo wasn't a Montague he would still be the person she loves. She loved him for how he really was, risking her reputation and maybe her life. 

 But the real question is, why is an old play so famous when it's common in life now? A blog writer asks if reading Romeo and Juliet is the same as students 400 years from now studying Love Actually? When your in love the outside world doesn't exists. Maybe you didn't like the play but that doesn't mean you will never fall in love like they did. Romeo didn't listen to his friends about forgetting Rosaline and again his friends told him loving Juliet is not a good idea. But he didn't listen.  Act 1 scene 4 "Begot of nothing but vain fantasy". In this line Mercutio tells Romeo that he shouldn't pay any attention to dreams and forget about them. Maybe Mercutio's never been in love before or he was heartbroken before, but we don't know for sure. Maybe those are the reasons why Mercutio is telling him to forget about love. Mercutio doesn't understand Romeo's feelings because he is not in love. Overall it looks like Romeo picked Juliet over his friends. Meaning he cares more for her than he ever did for them. 

 So Romeo and Juliet can be the greatest or the worst love story to you, but what they had is really love. You wouldn't die for someone you didn't love. You wouldn't choose your friends over who you want to spend your life with. You wouldn't call this lust. That us something different. This is actually love. But no matter how great Romeo and Juliet can be, to you your love is the greatest no matter what. 

Mid-Term Report Card

A: In my attendance and self regulation score, I think I deserve 24% out of 25% because I have never missed a class so far. (I can't find evidence for that...) I have tweeted what I'm supposed to tweet. I don't think I have problem staying in task, I do listen to Mr. Neuf, not just because I have to, it's because I want to. He has so much to say than to teach english, which I think everyone can learn from. 

B: In my assignment work I'm pretty sure I've done all of them. (I hope). So I give myself 23% out of 25%. I do try to finish everything on time. Everyone knows I don't talk much but I write a lot! Link to my blog: http://kritithapa.blogspot.ca/

D: For contribution in class I think I deserve 20% out of 25% because I comment most of the time but not as much as Sukhleen or Rebecca. I discuss in class sometimes, but more with my friends.(Im not shy. I just don't talk. Talk to me and i'll talk back.) When I read other people's blog I write positive feed backs,sometimes with suggestions and if theirs better than mine I fix mine. 

In total I may deserve 87%       

Favorite Soliloquy

Act Two Scene 3 lines 1-30, Friar's Soliloquy means:  

The smiling morning is replacing the frowning night. Darkness is stumbling out of the sun’s path like a drunk man. Now, before the sun comes up and burns away the dew, I have to fill this basket of mine with poisonous weeds and medicinal flowers. The Earth is nature’s mother and also nature’s tomb. Plants are born out of the Earth, and they are buried in the Earth when they die. From the Earth’s womb, many different sorts of plants and animals come forth, and the Earth provides her children with many excellent forms of nourishment. Everything nature creates has some special property, and each one is different. Herbs, plants, and stones possess great power. There is nothing on Earth that is so evil that it does not provide the earth with some special quality. And there is nothing that does not turn bad if it’s put to the wrong use and abused. Virtue turns to vice if it’s misused. Vice sometimes becomes virtue through the right activity.

 The significance of this soliloquy is that it explains the main parts of the play and kind of sums it up. The Friar's speech is like a long series of contrasts between good and bad. Which is more Yin-Yang then heaven and hell, which is not really religious. I think that he is saying, sometimes good things turn into bad things if you use it improperly. And sometimes bad things become good things through the right choices you make. Also, I think Shakespeare is hinting in the soliloquy to the Friar that he is not what he is supposed to be. And I think that is why Shakespeare chose the Friar to say this soliloquy.

I chose this soliloquy because it kinds of explains the play. And I thought it would help me understand the play better. I liked how Shakespeare used one of his characters to summarize the play. Even if he wrote it in a way we wouldn't understand or at least I wouldn't understand. I liked how Friar said how you are born from mother earth and when you die you go back there. I think what Shakespeare was trying to say in that line was that what goes around comes around. And if you do good you get good. If you do bad you get bad. It's the circle of life.

Healthy and Unhealthy Relationships

  In "Romeo and Juliet" one example of a healthy relationship could be the Nurse and Juliet. Another healthy relationship could be the Friar and Romeo.

  The nurse is like a mother to Juliet while the Friar is like an uncle to Romeo. Nurse always cares for Juliet and tells her the right things and supports her. She lets Juliet follow her own heart.  Through line 190-193 Act 2 Scene 4 it says " I anger her sometimes, and tell her that Paris is the proper man, but I'll warrant you, when I say so, she looks as pale as any clout in the versal world." What I think in this line is that the nurse is telling Romeo how Juliet gets when she tells her Paris is better man. But she is doing what Juliet wants her to do and she supports her. She proves she is a fun nurse and she kids with her a lot. For example, in Act 2 scene 5, line 38- 42 Nurse jokes about Romeo "You know not how to choose a man. Romeo? No, not he. Though his face be better than any man's, yet his legs excels all men's, and for a hand and a foot and a body, though they be not to be talked on, yet they are past compare. He is not the flower of courtesy, but, I'll warrant him as gentle as a lamb" 

 With Friar and Romeo it looks like the Friar is like a close uncle to him that cares for Romeo even he is not a regular boring priest. It seems the Friar is more close to Romeo than Romeo with his father. An example would be line 48 Act 2 Scene 3 " Friar: That's my good son! But where hast thou been then?" He cared for Romeo and gets worried when he gets involved with wrong people like Rosaline. Also he agrees to get Romeo married to Juliet fort the sake of Romeo and peace. Line 94 Act 2 Scene 4 "Friar: ...but come, young waverer, come go with me. In one respect I'll thy assistant be, For this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households' rancor to pure love."


  Some examples of unhealthy relationships in "Romeo and Juliet" could be Lady Capulet and Juliet and maybe Mercutio and Romeo.

  Lady Capulet and Juliet don't get along well. Their mother and daughter relationships doesn't seem to exist and maybe in some way it could have been the nurse's fault. But that is just my opinion. Sometimes I feel like Lady Capulet is scared  to talk to Juliet because she thinks Juliet hates her, which maybe true, but she doesn't make any effort to even try. Once she made an attempt to talk to her alone, but changed her mind and got Nurse instead. 

  Lady Capulet:" This is matter. Nurse, give leave awhile, We must talk in secret. Nurse, come back again. I have remembered me, thou's hear our counsel. Thou know eat my daughter's of a pretty age." Act 1 Scene 3 lines 8-11. She brought nurse back so she didn't have to deal with Juliet. Or it also could be a good relationship in a different way. Maybe she wanted Juliet to be stronger than she is and have more freedom. Or maybe not. 

  With Romeo and Mercutio their relationships with one another could be good or bad. Mercutio is a really good friend to Romeo. Even if he's not a Montague he's with Romeo. Basically, Mercutio is the leader of the Montague boys because the other boys are to scared to battle Tybalt. But, Mercutio and Romeo could have a bad relationship as well. Mercutio didn't support Romeo with their fight with Tybalt. And I think he died because he didn't agree with Romeo's decision. Instead he cursed both families. Mercutio:"I am hurt. A plague on both your houses! I am sped. Is he gone and hath nothing?" Act 3 Scene 1 lines 84-86

  Although some relationships have good in them they also have the bad. I think we have to try to at least make it work. Not ignore the bad. Or the good. Life has issues. That is just what life is. And I think a good relationship has no certain start or end.. Even when you see a person for the first time and you instantly want to go out with him/her. And that's what I think is normal. And that is what I think Shakespeare would have thought was normal. 

 In my opinion, I think he writes his play based on real life situations with a bit of fiction in them. I think he had a tough life and I think he used his play to express his feelings.

   

What Juliet thinks about love

Juliet: I have never been in love, but I think Cupid has struck me with his bow cause I'm falling for Romeo "then have my lips the sin that they have took" I really want to kiss him because I'm in love with him but I just met him.I don't know what to do. I love but I hate.I know what love is when I see Romeo but what is love when it comes to my parents. My mom can't even talk to me properly.She once asked to talk to me alone but she got nurse to talk to me. How can I love my parents when my dad is always drunk and my mom doesn't give a c$&p about me. Nurse is my true mother I love her more then anything. How can I learn what true love is when I'm getting forced into this marriage with Paris, he's not even cute. I hope my life gets less pathetic.. 

Interim Report

In class I think that I work well alone and in groups. I try to finish my work in class, if I don't I try do do it at home. I do put in a lot of effort into my work like my blog and personal page. Link to my personal page..

I try to finish my work on time. So far I don't think I have ever been late to finish my work. I do try my best when I do assignments.


I don't think I have ever missed a class before, and gotten late.


I usually comment on people's blog sometimes I forget but I try to when I remember or when I have no other homework.

I think it is interesting how we use technology to do our work. And I like how I have an excuse to tell my parents to go on the computer. It makes English fun to learn rather just sitting down doing quizzes all the time.
